Mr. Ruben's Background


Steven A. Ruben is the founding Principal and current Director of Ruben Associates.  Mr. Ruben has practiced law throughout Southern California for more than 25 years, and has extensive experience in matters involving trust and estate planning, administration and litigation, private foundations, charitable organizations and closely held businesses. He has received recognition as one of The Best Lawyers in America (Woodward/White), and as a Southern California Superlawyer (Law and Politics).

Prior to establishing Ruben Associates, Mr. Ruben practiced law with other firms, during which he was elected as partner of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, and designated as that firm's Departmental Coordinator for its Worldwide Personal Tax and Estate Planning Department.

Among the clients for whom Mr. Ruben has performed legal services and provided advice are Mr. W. Barron Hilton, Mrs. Walt Disney, President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan, Mr. Merv Griffin, The Estate of Howard Hughes, the University of Southern California, and the California Institute of Technology. Mr. Ruben is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the California Supreme Court and all other California State courts, the United States Tax Court, and the United States Federal District Court.

Mr. Ruben received his undergraduate degree in Finance from California State University, Northridge, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. He received a number of awards for his undergraduate scholarship, including recognition as the University's most outstanding Finance student (Financial Executive's Institute Award) and most outstanding Business student (Wall Street Journal Award), and was nominated as the University's most outstanding scholar (Wolfson Award). Upon graduation, he matriculated to Loyola Law School (Los Angeles) for one year where he finished in the top 1% of his class, was selected for Law Review and won the Dean's Merit Scholarship. After transferring to UCLA, Mr. Ruben received his law degree from the UCLA School of Law in 1986.

Mr. Ruben has authored books and articles on estate planning, tax planning, and trust and estate administration for the California State Bar, the California Society of Certified Public Accountants, the California Continuing Education of the Bar, the Rutter Group, The Practical Tax Lawyer and the Los Angeles County Bar Association, and he is a frequent lecturer on these areas of law. Mr. Ruben has presented programs at the University of Southern California Institute on Federal Taxation and has taught the advanced business law course at California State University, Northridge.

Mr. Ruben has served on the Executive Committee of the Los Angeles County Bar's Taxation Section, as Chairman of the Estate and Gift Tax Committee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, and as Vice Chairman of the American Bar Association's Trust and Estates Legislation Committee. He has also served on the Executive Committee of the Los Angeles County Bar's Trusts and Estates Section, and as a member of the Los Angeles Estate Planning Council and the Orange County Estate Planning Council.

Mr. Ruben has served as a member of the Board of Governors of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles Research Institute, and on the National Advisory Board of Directors for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
